With the approach of summer many women (and men) begin to think about wearing a swimsuit and all that it entails. Remember to consider your hair care down there before purchasing a new bathing suit this season. Decide what method you will use, how much hair you will remove, how much it will cost and how often you need to repeat the process.

Removing pubic hair is safe but often painful and inconvenient unless you only need a trim. Some of the hair removal procedures you may consider are waxing, Brazilian waxing, shaving, delipatories (hair removal cream) and electrolysis. You can by products or use at home or you can visit a salon and spa for hair removal.

General waxing consists of either warm or cold wax applied to the pubic hair region and then pulled off with strips of cotton. Waxing can be extremely painful but it does allow you to control how much hair is removed. One benefit is that you will remain hair free for several weeks.

Brazilian waxing is the same procedure as above but all hair (including any on the buttocks) is removed except for a small “landing strip” of hair. Brazilian waxing is more extensive and often a great deal more painful than general waxing but it gives you the feeling of being hairless down there!

Shaving has several advantages and disadvantages. Shaving is done with a razor in the privacy of your home and gives you complete control of how much hair to remove. Shaving allows you to determine how much hair to remove and even allows you to create a design if desired. Unfortunately, shaving does not last as long but it is virtually painless if you can avoid ingrown hairs.

Delipatories are hair removers like Nair that are available at the drugstore. These products require you to apply a cream or gel, wait a certain time and then rub off your hair. Unfortunately, many delipatories don't remove your hair if it is very coarse and the product and the rubbing can leave you with a sore, burning feeling.

Electrolysis involves a tiny and thin metal probe being slid into a hair follicle. Each hair follicle must be shocked with electricity that damages the follicle. This method is time consuming, painful, tedious and expensive but is permanent once all follicles have been destroyed.

If you do decide to visit a salon or spa for hair removal visit first before making an appointment. Make sure the location is clean and in good repair. Check to see if the aesthetician is licensed. Ask how they sterilize their supplies or if they provide a new set for each client. It is also important that they use a fresh, disposal bed covering for each client.

One of the most common questions dog owners are forced to address is how to train a dog not to bark.

Dogs love to bark. It's a perfectly natural thing for your dog to do, just as it's normal for us humans to speak.

It's when our dogs bark excessively that it becomes a problem for all concerned - including our neighbours.

Considering this, our goal isn't to to stop our dogs from barking, but rather how to control the excessive barking.

There are of course situations when we want our dogs to bark (and I guess there are also times when I like my chatty aunty to speak!)

Training our dogs to stop or at least reduce their barking habit can be a very difficult task.

The first step in modifying this problem is to determine the reason why your dog is barking in the first place. Once you've identified the cause or trigger, you can then plan yourtraining solution.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

  • To express their needs (being bossy).

  • Some dogs are bred to bark (some terriers and hounds).

  • They are staking out their territory.

  • To alert other members of their pack (that's you and your family) of impending danger.

  • When playing, just through sheer excitement.

  • Barking at other animals. Depending on where you are in the world, it could be squirrelsor any other small animal.

  • If they are isolated.

  • Some dogs bark excessively when separated from their pack (you and your family).

  • If they are trapped behind some type of barrier like a fence or window.

  • Just for fun!

  • To express dominance (puppies normally test you out at some stage with a display of dominance barking).

  • They bark because their owners have inadvertently rewarded excessive barking in the past (this is crucial to understand).

  • Through boredom or a lack of physical and mental stimulation.

  • May feel stressed or uncomfortable for some reason. Things like feeling threatened or if they don't have an appropriate place to sleep can cause excessive barking problems.

  • Dogs that haven't been properly socialized often become nuisance barkers.

  • May be looking for a response or some attention from their pack.

Another thing to keep in mind is that even though it may appear to you that your dog is barking at nothing, this is not necessarily the case. This is due to the fact that your dog has a much more acute sense of hearing, smell and sight than us humans. Your dogs excessive barking is probably being triggered by something.

How To Stop Your Dog From Barking

Ok, now we've sorted out the reason for your dogs barking problem, we can put some training techniques in place to control it.

The most important piece of advice to remember when trying to modify any dog behavioral problem, is to clearly communicate to your dog what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

One of the biggest mistakes us dog owners make is to inadvertently reward our dogs excessive barking. We actually encourage and reinforce the barking problem when we commit these three dog training sins:

  1. Yell and scream at the dog - this just gives them the attention they were crying out for.

  2. Let them inside. If your dog is barking his head off outside, then you let him in, this just rewards the barking.

  3. If your dog is barking and you react by giving him a comforting cuddle or a treat of some sort, you are definitely encouraging your dog to bark again. By doing this you are communicating to your dog that you are happy with him. You should be making it clear that his excessive barking is inappropriate.

Right, lets get stuck into some proven techniques to stop your dog from barking. I've listed the most common reasons why your dog may be barking, and some suggested solutions you can try.

Dog Goes Crazy Every Time The Phone Rings

This is a very common and annoying time for dogs to bark excessively. Try these training techniques:

  • Never yell at your dog.

  • Get your dog used to the phone ringing, don't make it such a big deal. Ring your home number from your cell phone or get a friend to keep calling you. When the phone rings just sit there, don't say or do a thing. Repeat this process over a few days, your dog will probably continue to bark for a while but will give up before long.

  • If you give your dog basic obedience training, behavioral problems such as excessive barking are easily controlled. Your dog looks up to you as their pack leader and is eager to please you in any situation. Teaching the Quiet! or Stop! obedience training command will soon correct nuisance barking problems.

  • You may have some success by changing the tone and volume of your ring tone.

Dog Barks When You Are Not Home

I'm not going to pretend this type of barking will be easy for you to control, because in reality it is often a difficult and lengthy process.

Always remember that dogs are social creatures, when they are separated from their pack (you) they can become stressed and frustrated. This type of excessive barking is often caused by separation anxiety.

  • Firstly I'd say just use your common sense and get these dog ownership basics right. Keep your dog well exercised (physical and mental) and provide fresh water, chewing toys and a nice comfortable place to sleep. You can also try to block your dogs view of the street or other distractions. Basically, make sure your dog is happy.

  • If you know your dog has been barking while you have been away, you must ignore him for a while when you return home. I understand this is difficult for lots of owners, but otherwise your dog believes that his barking is the reason you came back home to him. Just go about your business for a little while when you get home, ignoring your dog. When your dog has settled down, you then initiate contact with him.

  • This next method takes time and patience, but can be a very effective way to stop your dog from barking. It's based on that important rule applicable to all training situations. Praise or reward when your dog does something good, create a negative association when he does something bad. Leave the house as you normally would, but just hide somewhere nearby. When your dog starts to bark spray him with water or throw a tin can full of coins or rocks in his direction (this is the negative association). Try to keep out of your dogs sight while doing this if possible. Go and hide again, if he is quiet for a while, go in and reward his good behavior with some praise and maybe a treat. This process may need to be repeated over and over until you have broken the excessive barking habit.

  • The above techniques have proven to be successful with my own dogs, but if they don't work for you, maybe you could try a Citronella Collar. Again this method uses the power of negative association. Every time your dog barks, a fine mist of citronella is sprayed into the air. Most dogs hate the smell, and soon realise if they don't bark, the smell isn't there to bother them. If you have more than one dog this method is not a suitable solution.

Dog Barks For Attention Or To Demand Something

This is one excessive barking problem that can be corrected very quickly.

  • If you establish yourself as the pack leader or alpha dog in your owner-dog relationship, this type of barking problem won't occur. You'll also form a strong bond with your dog based on trust and respect.

  • Another effective method you can try to stop this attention barking is simply ignoring your dog. Your dog will probably become frustrated and bark alot initially, but once he realizes that it is not getting him anywhere, he will stop. This training method can be hard on the ears for a while!

Dog Barks At Passers By

Workers like the Postman and Delivery Driver's are constantly being barked at throughout their day.

Your dog perceives these type of people as intruders or a threat to their territory. The dog then barks and every time he barks he is rewarded, as the intruder goes away. Your dog is then very pleased that he has averted this threat, which leads him to do it again and again. His behavior is reinforced and therefore this can be a difficult problem to turn around.

  • If possible, you could try to block your dogs vision or access to the area where these people pass by.

  • Dog obedience training is the best solution to this type of excessive barking. Once you have your dog properly obedience trained, you will be able to communicate to him that this is unacceptable behavior.

  • If your dog consistently barks at a particular person, you may need this person to help modify your dogs behavior. Just say your dog gets really agitated each time the postman arrives. Have a chat to your postman and give him some of your dogs very favorite treats. Each time he delivers to your house, he can also deliver a tasty treat to your dog. In your dogs mind the postman goes from being a threat, to a welcome guest.

How To Train A Dog Not To Bark

In extreme cases of excessive barking, where all else has failed, some people advocate debarking surgery. I've never needed to go down this path with any of my dogs, and don't think I ever would. But if you have come to the end of the line and think you have run out of options, you could discuss debarking surgery with your Veterinarian.

Good luck in trying to control your dog's excessive barking. If you consistently apply the above training techniques and add a little patience, you should have your dog under control before long.

For a lot of people hair loss can be the result of a particular disease, genetic factor, hormonal influences and even chemotherapy treatment. However there is a category of hair loss that is arguably the most common and yet least talked about. Today there are a huge number of people taking prescription medications that cause hair loss and in this article we will discuss three very commonly used classes of prescription medications that have hair loss as part of their side-effects profile.

Anti-inflammatory Medications: Use of anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs - non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs) is incredibly common due to the fact that many people suffer from pain of one kind or another. Their use is increased due to the fact that they are easily obtainable over the counter. Ibuprofen for example is one very popular drug in this category.

However they can contribute to hair loss in both men and women and although much rarer children have been known to experience loss of hair due to the effects of anti-inflammatory medications.

If you need to take prescribed anti-inflammatory medication, please check with your doctor about the possible side-effects in relation to possible hair loss particularly if you are being prescribed any of the following: Celebrex, Rofecobix, Lodine, Clinoril, Indocin, Voltaren Orudis and Naflon.

Anabolic Steroids: Often associated with strength and power athletes such as bodybuilders and footballers anabolic steroids have a dramatic effect on the body's hormone system. The reason why they are so favoured by strength and power athletes is the fact that they can increase muscle mass very quickly. However because of their effect on the hormonal system particularly in relation to male hormones such as testosterone, one of their side effects is hair loss in women and men.

Even a very small amount of these medications can lead to sudden hair loss in anyone with any kind of sensitivity to DHT (a hormonal by-product of increased levels of testosterone that is known to cause hair loss)

If you are taking or are considering taking any of the following be advised that hair loss may be one of the undesired side-effects of doing so. Halotestin, Winstrol, Android, Danocrine, Depo-Testosterone, Metandren, Testred and Virilon.

Thyroid Medications: Hair loss in men and women can be significantly increased due to the effects of certain thyroid medications. The two most common examples of thyroid medication that can lead to thinning of hair, loss of hair and even baldness are Carbimazole and Thiouracil.

When considering taking any prescription or over-the-counter medication it is always wise to do the appropriate research and ask your doctor about the side-effects of these medications.

If you have a specific hair loss issue, the types of medication that you are taking could certainly be exacerbating if not causing the hair loss. By talking to your doctor, alternative options may be found, giving you the best treatment option for your specific health concern and minimizing the side-effects of the medications involved.

Part 2 of this article reveals valuable information on 5 other types of medications and their effects on hair loss. Electric wheelchairs are either rear or front wheel driven. Some of them are center driven or four wheel driven. These powerchairs come in many varieties like small portable models, foldable models, and models that can be dis-assembled. Large, full-featured electric wheelchairs that are called rehab chairs are also available. Powerchairs are designed for persons who have arm and leg disablement. Such people would find the operations of hand propelled wheelchairs quite difficult.

Electric wheelchairs are fitted with electric motors that are powered by 4 to 5 ampere rechargeable batteries. These motors are outboard boat engine types. The batteries come in dry or wet types. Dry type batteries are the most preferred ones due to ease of operation and maintenance. Electric wheelchairs are also fitted with battery chargers so that plugging into standard wall outlets is easy.

Operating either a joystick or a controller usually controls electric wheelchairs. Hand controllers, chin controllers, puff/sack controllers are specifically designed for persons with varying degrees of operational difficulty. The controller is the most expensive part of powerchairs and is quite delicate. Electric wheelchairs come with several optional functions like tilting, reclining seat and leg elevators, etc. to facilitate healthy and functional operations.

Electric wheelchairs for kids are generally those used by mentally disabled children or children affected by polio. These wheelchairs are custom made to suit the age of the child as well as the usage like indoors or outdoors or both. Polio affected kids and paraplegics were using hand supports till a few decades ago. Such hand supports normally resulted in severe body strain to the kids. The advent of electric wheelchair for kids has greatly relieved such kids of their suffering.

Travel had been on the rise and persons using wheelchairs are no exception. Traveling on vacation, travel for education, employment or participation in sports meets and general commuting for shopping, etc. have become indispensable for persons using electric wheelchairs. Portable and foldable models of wheelchairs require storage space, when not being used. As such, public transports like buses, trains and airplanes specifically provide electric wheelchair carriers. Buses with low boarding platforms that can literally lift wheelchairs into the buses have also been designed to serve such people. Such platforms are electrically or hydraulically operated.

Nowadays, in the United States, sales and service facilities for electric wheelchairs are quite widespread. You do not have to go too far to buy an electric wheelchair of your choice. As these powerchairs are made-to-order types, deliveries take some time but are normally very reliable. Electric wheelchair parts repair has also become quite easy, reliable and economical due to the healthy competition between the various electric wheelchair manufacturers.

Operation of an electric wheelchair by patients or disabled persons carries a certain amount of risk. Accidents could not be avoided at one time or another. Such accidents could be minor or major. Hence, insurance companies provide both accident/life insurance policies, as well as medicare policies to cover such risks. It is always advisable to take suitable insurance policies for physical and financial protection. Electric wheelchairs and Medicare go hand-in-hand for persons confined to wheelchairs.

Electric power scooters, or mobility scooters as they are called, are normally fitted with two rear wheels, a seat with a flat area to place the feet and a handlebar in the front to operate one or two steerable front wheels. Swiveling seats are also available. Electric power scooters are invariably electric powered by rechargeable batteries that could be charged from standard electric outlets. Certain models of mobile scooters are gasoline-powered. Such electric power scooters have been most welcome for persons confined to wheelchairs. They find such scooters handy for commuting to schools and colleges as well as to workplaces and shopping. Electric power scooters are normally cheaper than powerchairs. Insurance companies and healthcare agencies like Medicare prefer to insure or extend Medicare facilities for people using such scooters.

Baldness or hair loss is usually a problem associated with the male gender. Hair loss and baldness however is just as problematic for women as it is for men. Fortunately many types of female hair loss can be easily treated. Female hair loss in women can begin at any age. Some women experience hair loss that is hereditary in nature, while others may experience hair loss that results from hormonal changes or medication use. Not all women suffer from female pattern alopecia, which involves a thinning of the hair on top of the scalp. Some women for example, may experience hair loss on the sides or back of the scalp. Others may experience overall thinning. Some thinning, such as that associated with the post partum period, is usually temporary.

Hair Loss Patterns
Patterns of hair loss vary from woman to woman. The most commonly reported hair loss patterns in women include:

1. Thinning that occurs over the entire scalp. This thinning usually is more apparent at the back of the head.

2. Thinning over the scalp with more noticeable balding or thinning toward the front of the head. This pattern usually does not involve the front hairline however.

3. Thinning that occurs in the front of the scalp including the hairline.

Hair Loss Causes
Aside from androgenetic alopecia, which is often associated with male pattern baldness, a number of conditions can result in female hair loss. These include:

  • Alopecia areata - This is thought to result from an autoimmune disorder and can cause patches of hair to fall out.
  • Trichotillomania - Hair loss results in this case from compulsive pulling. Usually psychological treatment is necessary to resolve hair loss issues.
  • Triangular alopecia - This condition results in hair loss in the temporal areas of the scalp. Some women with this condition start losing their hair in childhood. Usually a doctor can treat this problem with medicines or surgery.
  • Scarring alopecia - This is hair loss that results from scarring. This commonly occurs in African American women. It may result from tight braiding that is persistent over time. Postmenopausal women are often more susceptible to this condition.

Hair loss in women can be devastating. Society typically regards women's hair as a sign of beauty, fertility and youth. Many women feel that a full head of hair is necessary to function well in life. Hair loss can result in emotional turmoil and self esteem for many women. Fortunately there are a number of highly effective treatments a woman can use to help combat hair loss. Here are some popular treatment choices for women experiencing hair loss:

  • Hair transplants - While this procedure is more commonly associated with men, women can also undergo hair transplant surgery. This treatment is often effective for reducing hair loss associated with a heredity-based condition. Not all women are good candidates for this procedure. Women who are good candidates include those with patchy areas of thinning rather than total hair thinning. Women must also have enough donor hair available for the transplant and the procedure should be able to meet a woman's expectations following transplantation.
  • Minoxidil - This is an effective and FDA approved treatment for hair loss in men and women. Women simply have to apply this topical treatment twice daily to help prevent or slow hair loss. Many users have reported hair regrowth with routine use. Many find this product an easy product to incorporate into a daily beauty regimen. Also called Rogaine, Minoxidil is one of the better-known therapies for hair loss in women.
  • Hair extensions - Many women are opting for human hair extensions to help restore their hairs thickness and length. Human hair extensions provide a natural looking alternative to hair transplantation surgery. You can use them to cover patches or to address overall hair thinning throughout the scalp. Hair extensions are applied in individual strands or in wefts. The safest application procedures involve braiding extensions into the hair. Using glues or waxes to apply hair extensions may result in increased damage to a woman's already fine and thinning hair.

It is important you consider your personal goals and lifestyle before selecting the hair treatment alternative most likely to resolve your hair problems. Remember, for many women hair loss is a reality. Fortunately there are many steps you can take to stop the problem from affecting your life and well-being!

About The Author:
Antigone Arthur is a successful freelance writer with 10 years of professional experience providing consumers with informative articles on such topics as hair restoration, alopecia areata, and hair analysis.

Men and women visiting a hair restoration centre or clinic have many different motives for desiring hair restoration. Whatever the motive, the decision to undertake hair restoration surgery should be an educated one before any desperate patient becomes an easy game for the unscrupulous hair transplant surgeon paying on fears and panic of his patients for immediate financial gain.

A patient?s education and counseling in a hair restoration clinic or center helps him or her to be the realistic about the outcomes of hair transplant surgery and cooperate with the hair restoration surgeon for designing the hair line or deciding the future course of the surgeries.

Along with the patient?s education, his or her psychology is also an important aspect of hair restoration surgery. A patient should never expect miracles from the hair restoration surgery but only that which is actually possible as briefed by the hair restoration surgeon.

Any article on counseling would not be complete without a discussion of the factors that lead to a patient?s dissatisfaction with the outcome of hair transplant surgery. The dissatisfaction rate among the patients undergoing surgical hair restoration is approximately 2%, even in the best hair restoration clinics.

With the slick, overstated advertising of modern hair restoration techniques and the high surgical fee charged by hair restoration surgeons t is very natural for the patient to expect too much from a hair transplant surgeon. Encouraged by aggressive litigation lawyers, the patients can even go to the extent of suing the hair transplant surgeon.

Though most patient do not go to the extent of suing, more often they grumble about the postoperative pain, lack of graft hair density and threaten the hair transplant surgeon.

A pre-operative counseling session at the hair restoration clinic definitely helps in reducing the disappointment rate with their hair restoration surgery. The prospective hair restoration patient needs to understand the difference between the results that can realistically be produced and the results they wish for.

No matter how careful and ethical the operating hair restoration surgeon is, there is a small group of patients who are very difficult to satisfy. Although no patient can ever be completely happy even with best of results, some patients due to their subverted psychology are much more difficult to please!

Experience has shown that young men aged 18?28 years have a higher dissatisfaction rate than men in older age groups. Their emotional immaturity plays a major role in this regard. Such men may have psychiatric problems, but a good hair restoration surgeon understands and never deprives these patients of the undoubted benefits of hair restoration surgery by a blunt denial. Instead they will do all sort of cajoling to agree them and be realistic about the outcomes.

Perhaps the greatest challenges sometimes do not lie in the actual hair transplantation procedures, but in the counseling process itself. And getting the patient, especially the young patient (at high risk of developing more advanced baldness in the future) willingly agreeing to undergo a conservative hair restoration is like wining half the battle! If a young bald person insists upon a hairline like other peers of his age, he is perhaps demanding something unnatural without any consideration for his future hair loss. And in such cases it all depends upon the counselor to convince the young person to understand that though some hair restoration possible it cannot give him the exact look he expects from the surgery.

Similarly, the counseling session with the patient for designing of his or her hair line also helps the hair transplant surgeon. Considerations of the individual patient?s facial structure, expectations, and hair quality are a must. But, though the quantity and quality of hair varies, the concepts of hair transplant surgery remain the same for every hair transplant surgery performed. By creative planning, judicious use of available donor hair and aesthetic and strategic placing of hair follicle grafts, a hair transplant surgeon can do much for the patient?s expectations!

If you have already made a decision to undergo a hair transplant surgery, find time to read through the web pages of hairtransplantadvice.com to make a well informed decision.

With the average person having about 100,000 hair follicles on the scalp to produce head hair, much work is going on daily in these tiny hair factories. Understanding the process of hair growth and how hair is formed can give a better understanding of why production stops resulting in hair loss.

Let's take a brief tour of the hair follicle with explanations in layman's terms, given the fact that few of us have taken medical studies.

The tour starts at the outer layer of skin called the epidermis which in turn has three layers starting with the germinative layer at the bottom, the granular layer above, and finally the cornified layer, the part which is visible.

The Bottom

The hair follicles are tiny pear shaped cups located in the germinative and granular layers of the skin on the scalp. While there are numerous layers and components that make up the hair follicle, our attention centers on the dermal papilla, located at the bottom end of the hair follicle.

Tiny blood vessels provide the nourishment needed for the dermal papilla or bulb shaped part of the hair follicle to keep up new cell production.

Now here is where a fascinating process kicks in. As new cells are formed in the bulb shaped dermal papilla, older cells are pushed upwards. As they reach the top of the bulb the cells are remarkably arranged into cylindrical layers, one inside the other, six in total.

While the outer 3 layers form a sheath in the hair follicle, the inner 3 layers begin to form the actual hair.

Other cells in the bulb produce the pigment (melanin) that gives hair its color. As the hair moves up the hair follicle, being pushed up as new cells are formed, the pigment or melanin in the inner part of the hair is carried upwards also.

The Middle

It is in the middle of the hair follicle that the cells which have been growing die. As they push upward they harden and now consist of a variety of proteins called keratins forming what we recognize as hair. Keratins are made up of smaller units called amino acids.

Interestingly some of these keratin proteins contain a high level of sulphur. (Some hair loss herbal remedies on the market use sulphur containing amino acids to provide an underlying matrix for healthy hair growth. See resource box below for NewHair Biofactors)

The Top

As this process of new cell creation from the bottom pushes older cells to the middle where they die and harden they finally arrive at the top of the hair follicle where they emerge from the scalp as the hair shaft.

Sebaceous glands near the top of the hair follicle produce an oily secretion called 'sebum' which helps make the hair water proof, and plays an important role in preventing bacteria from getting out of control which may become harmful.

Hair Close-Up

When you examine a hair under a powerful microscope you will see the surface almost resembles the scales on a fish. When the scales are smoothed in one direction the hair looks shiny and lays flat. When the scales are roughed up by an ingredient that moves 'against the grain' the hair appears stiffer and stands up. This characteristic is utilized in some hair products that claim to increase body and volume.

To use another comparison, hair may be likened to a tree with a tough outer bark. The inner shaft of the hair is moist lying beneath the protective bark. If the outer protective covering is stripped off through rough treatment the inner part of the hair, the cortex, is exposed and may break.

What does this tour of the hair follicle teach us about hair loss and hair growth?

It can be seen that hair production is an amazingly complex process that can be affected by many things. As these tiny hair factories, the hair follicles depend on a supply of healthy, oxygenated blood that is part of a healthy circulatory system, lifestyle choices are likely to affect hair loss and hair growth to a considerable degree.

So if you are concerned about thinning hair, take a look at your diet and exercise regimen. They can have a huge bearing on the health of your skin and scalp.

Helpful Resources

Jonathon E. Phillips, a leading hair loss analyst, firmly believes in this 'whole body' approach to hair loss rather than relying on prescription drugs which often require almost a lifetime commitment with subsequent side effects.

He sets out his Step-By-Step Hair Power Regimen in his illuminating 168 ebook “Hair Loss No More.” I personally have a copy and enthusiastically recommend it to anyone concerned about hair loss. (See resource box)

Another resource I use is a hair shampoo from a company called Nisim International, hair specialists for over 20 years. Their NewHair Biofactors System contains a deep cleansing shampoo which neutralizes the effect of DHT, the substance which gets into the hair follicle and basically shuts it down causing loss of hair. Again, see the resource box for details.

An understanding of hair growth can help us be very cautious when evaluating the claims of some hair loss products on the market which attempt to treat the problem superficially from the outside rather than getting to the root of the problem from the inside.

Additionally, educating ourselves about hair growth and the function of the hair follicle can be a major factor in controlling hair loss and doing what is necessary in our lives to promote healthy hair growth.

Mike Jones is a writer and webmaster with over 10 years experience. His recommendations:

When you are away from home in a different climate your hair will be subjected to weather it is not used to.

Your hair needs to be protected in the same way that you do with your skin. UV rays are very harmful to your hair affecting the pigment, strength, shine and vitality.

For your skin you take with you cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen and after-sun lotions so for your hair take shampoo, conditioner, hair sunscreen and styling products.

Cold Climate

1. Cold temperatures weaken your hair and susceptible to damage. Flyaway hair tends to be subject to static. Hair should be well conditioned and protected by wearing a hat.

2. If you have frizzy hair use a leave-in conditioner and take a deep moisturizing mask with you on holiday. All hair types will benefit from using a heat protection spray and serum to keep the elements out and keep the moisture in.

Humid climate

3. Hair expands just like it does when it is wet in a humid climate. This will make your hair fluffy or if it is curly, frizzy.

4. For all hair types, a pre-holiday deep conditioning treatment is a must to nourish the hair and seal the cuticles, as you want to prevent excess moisture from entering the hair shaft.

5. If you have fine hair use a light leave-in conditioner from mid-way down the hair to the ends and use a serum to seal the ends after blow-drying, being careful not to overdo the serum on fine hair.

6. If you have curly and/or frizzy hair then you need to seal the cuticle (the outside of your hair) to minimize the additional frizziness that results in humid weather.

7. Use a leave-in conditioner very morning. Use an anti-frizz serum to coat and seal the cuticle.

Hot and dry climate

8. The sun strips the hair of its natural oils and dry heat increases this effect. UV rays attack your hair and the resulting free radicals damage the hair. The weakened cuticle causes the hair to become dehydrated, allows the bleaching and fading of the color pigment as well as split ends.

9. To protect your hair 100% from sun damage wear a hat!

10. Deep conditioning your hair before your holiday is essential.

11. If you have fine hair use a wash your hair with a gentle shampoo and use a light leave-in conditioner with UV protection. Use a sun-protection spray containing a UV filter to screen your hair from the effects of the sun and seawater and re-apply after going in the sea.

12. If you have curly hair use a moisturizing shampoo and a leave-in conditioner to minimize dryness. Apply a nourishing hair mask whilst you are away to deep condition your hair. Use a sun-protection spray containing a UV filter to screen your hair from the effects of the sun and seawater and re-apply after going in the sea.

13. If you have frizzy hair use a sun-protection spray containing a UV filter to screen your hair from the effects of the sun and seawater and re-apply after going in the sea.Use a rich leave-in conditioner with UV protection each morning and apply a hair mask every other day during the holiday.

14. When you have been swimming in the sea always wash the salt out afterwards.

15. Chlorine from the swimming pool is extremely damaging when combined with the effects of the sun, wet your hair in the shower before hand and protect your hair with a leave-in conditioner preferably one containing a UV filter. Wash your hair thoroughly after swimming.

16. Hair grips and bands are an extremely useful item to have on holiday and offer a quick-fix solution for hair care problems.

17. Don't forget your travel plug to ensure that you can still use your hairdryer and other electric hairstyling equipment whilst abroad.

Bon Voyage!
